We had our monthly PTSO meeting tonight at Miss Priss’s school. I haven’t been able to make it to the last couple of meetings because of work, so I was glad to be able to take her tonight. Hubby had baseball practice, and I took Little Man to my mom’s so she and I could have some girl time.
After the meeting, we went to the music room to hear a couple of young musicians (one local and one from a nearby county). They played the banjo and the fiddle. They’ve both won multiple awards and are extremely talented. The young lady is also a clogging champion and displayed a bit of that talent as well. I told Maggie I thought we may have found a new exercise program! She said she couldn’t blog and have a conversation with her hubby, much less clog and hold a fiddle!
I agree - I’m not quite that talented!
After the music room, we went to the art room to watch and listen to a local artist discuss her career and give some tips on painting. She encouraged the kids to follow their dreams. I loved seeing Miss Priss’s face as she was listening and when she got to talk to the artist before we left. My girl is so creative and paints and draws all the time. This was right up her alley!
I talked to the principal for a little while before going home and told him how much I appreciated the school doing this tonight. Slowly, but surely, it seems as though school systems are phasing out music and art programs. I feel like these creative outlets are imperative for our kids to grow in the educational process. They can learn so much from these programs! My SIL is an art teacher at one of the local elementary schools. She incorporates history into her lessons, and her students learn math and geometry skills such as measurements, depth perception, shapes, etc. I hope the arts are around for a long time to come in our school system!
Anyway, we had a good evening together and took a little trip to Mickey D’s on the way home. No ”girls night out” is complete without chicken nuggets, right?
BTW - I should mention since I’m discussing the arts, for any of you locals whose kids enjoy live productions, “Arthur and friends” are going to be at the Glema Mahr Center at MCC on Monday night at 7:00 pm. There are still plenty of tickets left - I just got ours today. I thought it would be a cute Easter present for the kids. They were so excited when I told them we were going! You can call 821-ARTS to get tickets - adults $12 and kids $6. We’ve been to a couple of shows over there (last year we took the kids to see Clifford), and they are well worth it!
